What - A chair with our friend and partner James Johnson. The word KUMU is Japanese and means to put together or assemble. This fits perfectly as the chair comprises of only seven components that all lock together to form the structure. There are no screws or mechanical fixings, and KUMU is machined out of a single sheet of environmentally friendly, sustainable plywood.
How - A product that was born here in the studio, without a client, and began with simple 1:5 card models. We then undertook, sketch design, CAD drawings, product design, prototyping, field testing, user evaluations.
Outcome - Currently in manufacture by East London eco-manufacturers Unto This Last. The photo below shows extensive use of the chair in the bar at The National Film Theatre.
